Fader's Ruins ALLUVIUM IN CACHEUTA LUJAN DE CUYO Cacheuta has to its credit the first hydroelectric power plant in the country, which was inaugurated in 1926 and took advantage of a 45 meters difference in level. On the afternoon of Wednesday, Jnauary 1913, after several days of intense heat and as a consequence of the thaw and strong storms, a flood of terrible proportions was unleashed in the mountain range. The waters descended at great speed and the Mendoza riverbed rose 7 meters above the normal level. A glacier obstructed the riverbed, creating a sort of containment dike, which was swept away by the force of the waters and produced a flood that extended to the town of Palmira. The waters destroyed the Cacheuta Power Plant, the Cacheuta Hotel, houses, roads, bridges, buildings and railroad tracks that were in their path. The number of victims exceeded 20.
